A RESORT that allows rich people to live like poor Africans in shanty towns while enjoying five-star comforts has been labelled "poverty porn."
Emoya Estate says its corrugated metal huts allow visitors the opportunity to experience life in a shanty town but "in a safe environment."
But tourists can still enjoy running water, electricity and Wi-Fi.  A shanty usually consists of old corrugated iron sheets or any other waterproof material which is constructed in such a way to form a basic, small "house".
"Millions of people are living in informal settlements across South Africa. These settlements consist of thousands of houses also referred to as Shacks, Shantys or Makhukhus," Emoya's website says. "Now you can experience staying in a Shanty within the safe environment of a private game reserve. This is the only Shanty Town in the world equipped with under-floor heating and wireless internet access!"
The resort accomodates up to 52 guests at a time.
A night in one of the 'shacks' costs $80 , only slightly less than the $98 average monthly wage of a South African domestic worker.

American political satirist Stephen Colbert slammed the resort, which he said was "at best, insensitive; and at worst, poverty porn."
Emoya says the resort is "safe and child friendly" and set to be "the experience of a lifetime."
