ADAM Lanza walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut on December 14, 2012 and shot dead 26 people, including 20 children.
The 20-year-old fired 154 shots in under five minutes with his .223 Bushmaster AR-15 during the massacre.
He had already killed his mother at the home they shared and afterwards, shot himself.
A 48-page report has been released by Connecticut's State Attorney, saying the investigation is closed and no charges will be brought. His motives may never be known.
Small details about the 20-year-old killer's life have emerged, including his obsession with the 1999 Columbine massacre and violent video games.
Photos from inside his bedroom present a portrait of a man who was deeply disturbed.
His windows can be seen taped over with garbage bags. He didn't allow anyone into his room, including his mother.
She was also not allowed in his games basement.
Lanza was heavily armed when he entered Sandy Hook Elementary School. He carried a Bushmaster semiautomatic rifle, a Glock pistol, a Sig Sauer semiautomatic pistol, and an Izhmash Saiga 12 gauge semiautomatic shotgun. In his house, police found a Savage Mark II rifle.
Authorities also found a bizarre Christmas gift from Lanza's mother in his bedroom - a cheque to purchase a CZ 83 firearm.
His ID card was also discovered among car keys, tissues and coins. His wide-eyed, scrawny photo is a chilling indication of a strange personality.
Computer files uncovered from within the home include videos showing suicide using a firearm, movies depicting mass shootings, a computer game titled: "School Shooting", video of children being shot, a document showing the prerequisites for a mass murder spreadsheet, a list of mass murders and a large amount of information on the Columbine massacre.
There was also weird content found such as photos of hamsters and videos of Dance Dance Revolution.
It is believe he acted alone, no one was aware of his plans and he had severe and untreated mental health issues.
"It is known that the shooter had significant mental health issues that affected his ability to live a normal life and to interact with others, even those to whom he should have been close. As an adult he did not recognise or help himself deal with those issues."
Left untreated, the outcome was ultimately devastating.
