THE XBOX One has landed but despite offering next-generation gaming, its size looks like its stepped back in time. In fact, it's even bigger than the old Xbox 360. So why is the Xbox One so massive?
Compared to Sony's PS4, this black box is truly monolithic and the answers lie underneath the hood. Website iFixit satisfies all our warranty-voiding curiosities by dismantling gadgets to see what's inside and they finally got their hands on the Xbox One.
The teardown reveals not only a motherboard that covers its whole chassis but also the two culprits of its bulk: the fan and new Blu-ray drive.
The fan, designed to keep the innards at a cool operating temperature, is about the size of a Hungry Jack's Whopper. It seems the reasoning for this size is to ensure none of the Xbox 360, red-ring-of-death, overheating issues come back to haunt them. Also, as it now lets you watch your TV through it, the Xbox One is intended to be 'always on', so the fan should help prevent it running too hot.
Have a look at the PS4 teardown and you'll see a svelte Blu-ray drive. But inside the Xbox there's a hulking unit clad in a metal body. Considering Sony has been backing Blu-ray since its inception while Microsoft toiled with the now dead HD-DVD format, there's no wonder they have the jump here.
While the size is frustrating, particularly to pedantic home entertainment lovers, you can now understand why and hopefully game with more peace of mind.
