TENS of thousands of people are expected to flock to the suburbs from this weekend with festive communities illuminating residential streets in a combined show of Christmas cheer.
Thousands will make the pilgrimage to Lobethal as the town flicks the switch tonight for the largest community display of its type in the southern hemisphere which runs every night until December 30.
But quiet suburban streets could steal the celebrations this year as families transform their homes into Christmas wonderlands, inviting crowds from all over South Australia to marvel at their merry creations.
From the north to the south, from east to west - and of course in the country - streets will glow with Christmas pride bringing neighbours and strangers together.
A tradition in its twelfth year, six homes in the small Paradise cul-de-sac of Leewood Court are decked out with decorations and light displays.
Rosalie Tucker, who has lived in the street for more than 20 years, says hundreds of people flock to see the display.
"Elderly people come on tour buses and families bring their children," Mrs Tucker says.
"On weekends the street is packed with people so we just stand out the front and chat the whole night.
"It's wonderful to see how much joy people get from it and they always thank us for the display."
"When we first moved here we started out with a couple of lights on the front of the house but it has just snowballed.
"My husband grizzles and grumbles when it comes to putting up the lights because we have so many to untangle and sort but we all get a kick out of it and the whole street has become friends because of it."
Neighbour Christina Kalamitis says she is always excited to help set up her family's light display.
"It's always changing and getting bigger each year," Christina, 12, says.
"I like how it brings the court together and brings so much joy to children and the elderly."
