POLICE are warning car vandals have struck in the lead up to Christmas in Melbourne's north east.
Detectives are hunting vandals that broke in to eight cars in Manningham overnight.
Police said the damage bill will hit some families hard before Christmas.
It is believed the same culprits are responsible for a further 60 car break ins reported in the eastern suburbs between January and December.
Investigators said the vandals drive slowly, pulling up next to the target vehicle before smashing the rear or front windscreens with an unknown instrument.
Templestowe and Bulleen have been the suburbs hardest hit, with offences also reported in Lower Templestowe and Doncaster East.
It's believed many of the vehicles have been targeted between 1am and 4am.
One Mercedes owner received a damage bill of $1400 this morning after waking up to discover her rear windows smashed, just in time for Christmas.
Detective Senior Constable Leeanne Trusler said the vandalism would hit some families hard.
"It's a senseless act - people don't need to be worrying about forking out money for this kind of thing so close to Christmas," she said.
"We'd encourage people to talk to their neighbours and report any suspicious activity to Triple Zero immediately.
