"The circumstances of what occurred, why it occurred are unknown at the moment," he said.
"It's a matter that will require a lot of investigation to try and find out who was around and what actually happened."
A Kilburn resident, Regina, said it was a quiet residential area.
"You don't expect to wake up and find crime scene tape on your fence," she said.
"It was a bit like 'oh my God' ... but it could happen anywhere."
Another resident, Isabelle Monvoisin, said she was concerned for her safety as she walks to work.
She said she felt safe before the stabbing but thought she would now take precautions such as catching a bus to work.
Churchill Rd was closed for several hours while police searched the area for evidence.
A few days after that killing, convicted sex offender Rodney Maxwell Larcombe, 65, was found murdered in his Warradale bedroom.
Inquiries continue in relation to the alleged suspect and in the meantime police ask if anyone saw the incident or has any information that may assist police to call Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000 or report online www.sa.crimestoppers.com.au.
