A MIXED martial arts fighter may be charged after he fended off four home intruders, killing one and severely injuring another.
The New Mexico fight occurred at 2am on New Year's Day after MMA fighter Joe Torrez's fiance's sister arrived at their home and said she had been "jumped."
Torrez then received a threatening phone call from 22-year-old Leonard Calvillio, theLas Cruces Sun-News reports.
"I'm big Eastside," he said, referring to a gang. "I'll kill you and your family... I will go to your house."
Shortly after the call Torrez, who was inside the home with his son and other friends, heard a big bang.
That is when Calvillo forced his way into the home along with 25-year-old Sal Garces, his 19-year-old brother Raymond Garces and 20-year-old Nathan Avalos.
Torrez fatally beat and stabbed Sal Garces and beat Avalos so badly he was taken to hospital with severe facial injuries. The other two fled the scene.
The younger Garces and Calvillo were arrested shortly after the altercation.
What led to the fatal fight are unclear, but Raymond Garces told police the group had gone to Torrez's home after a previous altercation,.
An attorney for Torrez, CJ McElhinney, says his client was acting in self-defence.
"He was fighting for his life," said Mr McElhinney.
Calvillo has been charged with aggravated battery, two counts of conspiracy and criminal damage to property. Raymond Garces was charged with two counts of conspiracy and criminal damage to property. Avalos has not been charged, but the case is still under investigation.
Authorities haven't ruled out charging Torrez with any crimes. A Facebook page has been setup in support of the MMA fighter.
